55 bodies at Arthur G Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida
Sad news out of Marianna, Florida today. The University of South Florida researchers discovered the remains of 55 boys, buried in a graveyard, from the former Arthur G. Dozier School for boys.
This former school for boys has been under investigation for child abuse and other criminal acts, during it’s 100 year history. This school was closed in June of 2011. The original records showed only 31 bodies of boys in the graveyard but that number is higher than even the prediction by the USF of only 49 bodies.
Officials are now trying to identify the bodies of the unknown boys. In some cases, officials on the scene found bones, teeth, and several artifacts, including belt buckles, zippers and buttons, during their search of the grounds.
The hard part of identifying the bodies is now under way and will include writing a separate report for each exhumed body, informtion from the bones and dental remains, the artifacts and the manner of burial of the remains. Bones and teeth are being sent to the University of North Texas Health Science Center for DNA testing in hopes of making identifications of victims.
There are many agencies working on this case, including the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, to find possible family of the deceased boys and gather DNA samples which may help in identifying some of the children. To this date only 11 families of the former Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys have been found.
Officials are hoping to find at least 42 other families and have published a list of the families, which can be found at the link below. Officials are asking anyone with information on this case to contact the HCSO Master Detective, Greg Thomas, at 813-247-8678.
Officials on the scene are continuing in their search for additional bodies in unmarked graves on the school grounds.
